Tia Keenan is the type of risk-taking cheese expert who’s been known to create such novel pairings as Jasper Hill Farm Willoughby and maple cotton candy.
NY Epicurean Events is honored to showcase the Queens-based cheese expert and her recently published book “The Art of The Cheese Plate: Pairings, Recipes, Styles, Attitude,” at this year’s Great Northeast Cheese & Dairy Fest on Saturday, December 10 at Flushing Town Hall.
A longtime Queens resident whose roots in the borough run as deep as her passion for cheese, Keenan consulted on Astoria favorite The Queens Kickshaw and pioneered the cheese bar concept by opening New York City's first cheese bar in 2007. The chef, consultant, stylist and self-proclaimed Kasekaserina oversaw the cheese program for The Modern, at the Museum of Modern Art.
In her new book Keenan continues to shift the cheese pairing paradigm featuring such innovative couplings as Bûcheron with Tandoori Cashews and Jasper Hill Creamery Winnimere with Mosto Cotto Glazed Bacon. All told, The Art of The Cheese Plate offers 37 different permutations, featuring 100 cheeses, 111 pairings, and 84 recipes all with clear-cut directions and expert tips.
"Holy cow (and sheep, and goat, and buffalo)! Tia Keenan's masterful book is to cheese what the moon landing was to the space program in 1969,” says Anne Saxelby, founder of Saxelby Cheesemongers. “After you read this book, you'll never think of a cheese plate in the same way.”
So, be sure to stop and say hello to Tia and grab a copy of her book. Along with some cheese from the festival’s many creameries, it makes the perfect holiday gift.
